In this post we will examine the next 3 things you must do to get into a Residency Program in the United States. Click here to access Part I.
- Letters of Recommendations. You should ask 3-4 physicians from which you have worked within the last 6 months to a year for a letter of recommendation. Your letters should come from doctors who know you best and will write an outstanding letter of recommendation that will convince residency committee members that if the residency program you applied for does not hire you, then their doctor’s office or hospital will.
- Research Experience. Residency programs like candidates that have either research experience in their medical specialty or have a desire to do research in the future. If you do not have any current experience, then find a project that interests you in the specialty for which you are applying and look for someone in that department who is currently doing research on that topic and express interest in working with that person.
- City and Population. Make sure you are familiar with the city where the residency program is located. Know key points of interest in the city, as well as the type of population who lives there. These people will most likely be your patients, so be familiar with the surroundings.
It is not easy getting into a medical residency program in the United States if you are an international graduate, but it is still attainable with the right guidance and persistence. Follow each of the six steps and you will get into the residency program of your choice. Good luck!
