There are four Steps that make up the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination), and each Step has its own criteria for passing. Even though a passing score is considered being within the 75th percentile, the score for each USMLE Step is different.
The USMLE Step 1, which tests the basic science knowledge that is taught within the first two years of medical school, asks 280 questions. To pass within the 75th percentile, Step 1 examinees must score at least 192.
The USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, which tests the clinical knowledge that is taught within the third and fourth years of medical school, asks 355 questions. To pass within the 75th percentile, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge examinees must score at least 209.
The USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills, which tests the application of the clinical knowledge, is a hands-on examination where test examinees much treat 12 cases about various illness that affect the entire population. There is no passing numerical score for the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills examination. There is only a PASS OR FAIL scoring, and there must be a PASS in all three subcategories of testing. These three subcategories are Integrated Clinical Encounter (ICE), Communication and Interpersonal Skills (CIS), and Spoken English Proficiency (SEP).
The USMLE Step 3 is the only USMLE Step that is a 2-day examination that is composed of both multiple choice questions about clinical encounters, as well as numerous simulations that general practitioners must face in the office and hospital settings. To pass within the 75th percentile, Step 3 examinees must score at least 196.
