Do I Have To Take The USMLE In The US?

Many of the doctors in the United States are not actually from the United States. They are either from other countries who come to the US to study medicine or they study abroad and later come to the US to practice medicine.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is the four-part examination that all medical students and doctors must pass in order to practice medicine in the United States. Even though it is a required test for medical training in the US, it does not have to be taken in the United States. Foreign medical graduates, as well as US students living abroad, can take their examination in numerous locations across the globe. This may seem to be a leisure taking your test in a foreign country, but know the cost of the examination is very different.

Graduates of foreign medical schools do not pay the same for their tests as do medical students in the United States. There are multiple fees that are added to the actual cost of the examination, so those test takers will end up paying hundreds of dollars more for the exact same exam.

The rules and regulations affiliated with the USMLE and the Prometric Centers where the USMLE is administered will still be upheld outside the United States, as they will be in the US. So if you violate one of the rules, you will be penalized the same, as if you were in the US. So if you have chosen to study or live outside the United States and later choose to come to the US to train in a medical residency program and practice medicine, know you have the option to take your USMLE Steps outside the US in another country with the same US standards but the cost will be more.
