Parenting is the hardest and most rewarding experience of our lifetime. Shaping and molding another life is a huge responsibility that parents must face on a daily basis. Whatever plan you make for your child must be thought through to ensure the safety and perseverance of the future of your child. Just as much time and planning you make for the future of your child, you must make for the your USMLE preparation.
Because you may have a life dependent on you, you must plan accordingly for your USMLE Steps. If you have a small child, ensure your trustworthy babysitter/nanny is available daily during your study time and test date. Check school/daycare center hours of business and if there are any closures, such as for bad weather in your area. Always have a backup plan for child care, in case any unforeseen events may occur.
Make sure your child has enough food throughout the day, so he/she can eat while you are studying each day. Leave additional money, in case food or any supplies may run out or an emergency may occur that warrants a trip to the store if you are not around. If possible, give another family member or friend’s number as an emergency contact to your child or whoever is responsible for your child, so you can study daily and then complete your examination on test day. Once you start your actual USMLE Step on the day of your examination, you cannot stop the time and your test attempt will count, even if you leave for an emergency.
Remember, preparation is the key to success for parenting and the USMLE.
